St Andrews Day Christmas Party

Monday night saw Ashley, Connor and Darcy (and I) traveling across Sydney to Turramurra Masonic Hall for their charity christmas night, in honour of St Andrews Day.

The children danced beautifully, and were much loved.

In the first bracket they did a Highland Fling Trio, then Darcy did her Pas de Basques and Highcuts, Connor did the Flora, Ashley did the Blue Bonnets, Darcy did Pas de Basques and Ashley finished the set with the Village Maid. The Village Maid went down a treat, I used Dougies music 'Good Times With The Wilson' which has a beautiful Village Maid track that plays Waltzing Matilda for the last two steps. The audience sang along!

After a yummy dessert we moved along to the second bracket.

Darcy opened the event with the Sword Dance - very good awe aspect to have a tiny girl doing the Gillie Callium over swords bigger than she is! Then Connor did the Seann Triubhas in his tartan jeans, Ashley did the Scotch Measure, Darcy did the Lilt and Connor finished up the night with his funky jazz dance, Still Rock and Roll to me, which had the audience clapping and singing along.

It was a lovely night, and the children received a gift of Tunnock Tea Cakes each as a thank you. (they went down very well!)

We do love dancing at events such as these. It is important to instill in the dancers the value of community.

So this week, during the ST Averil had another daydream!

We have decided she is an adult version of Clarice Bean!!

This week, whilst dancing 'step at a time' Averil was ready to start her side travel step, and she raced in to do her shake and almost slipped onto her backside.

She said later that she was imagining she was at a track and field event and the starter gun went off so she had to race in fast to catch up!!

Oh Av!! You delight us with your mad mad imaginings!!! :D

Happy 100th Birthday Hilda!

What I particularily love about teaching Scottish Highland Dancing is the link it has with people of all ages.

On Sunday 3 dancers performed at a very special gig.

It was the 100th birthday of a lady named Hilda.

It was a surprise party, they had a piper and dancers perform for her.

Hilda loved it, and was very emotional. She particularily loved it when Ceilidh danced the Flora MacDonalds Fancy, as Hilda is a descendant of Flora MacDonald.

Darcy, at just turned 6, went over very well, as a crowd always love to see little ones perform. And of course - a boy in a kilt doing a sword dance is always a great hit too - so Connor lapped up that attention!

I will be receiving photos in the next few days and will post some up here then.

It was a very special day and Hilda seemed to have a fantastic 100th birthday!

Averil's Day Dream!

At our Wifey's class on Wednesday night....

We were doing a Step-at-a-time Hornpipe and Av missed her turn, which was cool (had to start the music again anyway!), but what was hillarious was the reason she missed her turn....

She said she was day dreaming that the girls really WERE on a ship and that Greer was trying to do the pumping step but rolling down the deck and I was up in the crowsnest with a telescope leaning over and watching & calling out corrections from up there!! It was hillarious!!! SOOOO COOL!!! hahahah! We all lost it and couldn't stop laughing!

I have always dreamed of dancing in Scotland. One of my long term goals has always been to dance in the country in which Highland Dancing originates. Until August last year, that is all it was for me, a dream and a hope that someday it would happen. Without the help of the BBM Scholarship that might still have been the case.

On the 4th of September 2008 I received a much anticipated email from OzScot Australia, informing me that I had been accepted as 1 of the 45 dancers to represent Australia in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in 2009. The opportunity to dance in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo has been something I have always wanted to do since I was 9, always telling people that one day I was going to dance on the Castle Esplanade.

Receiving an email from BBM informing me that I was the nominee for the Highland Dancing Scholarship early March 2009 was something that made me feel that all my goals were now possible. Being awarded a grant of $7000 made it possible for me to travel over to Scotland to participate in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. It also ment that I had the opportunity to stay in Scotland when most of the OzScot team departed for home. I decided that with the money not only would I be able to travel to Scotland for the EMT, but I would also sit my Members Highland Exam, take classes from a Scottish teacher and compete in some Highland Games.

On the 30th of July 2009, I left Australia to achieve my goals and dreams. We wasted no time - being driven straight to Redford Barracks for rehearsals the day after our arrival. Our first week was full of long intense rehearsals while Billy Forsyth taught us the dance he had choreographed for the Tattoo that year. Being the 250th Anniversary of Robert Burns, naturally making that the Tattoo’s theme for 2009, we were telling the story of Tam O’Shanter. We had to play the character of the witches in the tale; it was exciting to be able to have a theatrical aspect added to the dance, a character to play each night. Before we began to move our rehearsals from the gym at Redford Barracks to Edinburgh Castle, Billy warned us that there was a 20ft drop from the top of the Castle to the bottom of the Esplanade and that part of our choreography would take some practice to get to our positions in time. When we arrived and were able to see the Esplanade ourselves, most of us didn’t believe what Billy had told us. However, after one practice all our doubts faded – it was going to take ALOT of practice and hard work to get from one position to another.

It wasn’t long before our second dress rehearsal, which also marked our first performance with an audience. It was time for us to get all dressed up and into character – the addition of crazy hair and make-up made it so much easier to become the character of a witch than it had been during our rehearsals. With much excitement we all waited for the jets to fly over the Castle and to hear the sound of the canons that marked the commencement of the Tattoo. It seemed such a long time before we were told we needed to make our way out of our rest area and to get into our lines to make our way under the stands. This marked the first out of many times both the Australian and the Scottish Dancers warmed up to the music of the Swiss Army Central Band. But soon enough it was our time to take the spotlight as we transformed the Castle Esplanade into the haunted Auld Kirk Alloway, once we heard the sound of thunder we were all in character, slowly creeping out onto the darkened Esplanade. As the music began to increase in speed; the lights increased and we could now see our audience, it was a moment I will never forget, the smile never once left my face. We performed on the Castle Esplanade 25 times, infront of a crowd of 9000 each night. The adrenaline pumped quickly every night as soon as I placed my foot within the sight of the crowd, I enjoyed every moment that I was out infront of our audience, and I cherished every moment of it.

As well as our performances at the Castle, the Australian team also performed in 4 Satellite Tattoo’s where we performed Choreography by Cheryl Roach – Streaming Reels and Other Stories. These Satellite Tattoo’s were spread throughout our duration in Scotland, we performed at George Square in Glasgow, Linlithgow Palace, Dumfries House in Ayrshire and in Jedburgh. This was an excellent opportunity for the Australian dancers to show what we could do as a team, show Scotland why we were chosen to travel to Edinburgh for the Tattoo..
Eventually we came to the conclusion of the Tattoo; our final performance was on the 29th of August. There were many tears as we came off from our last performance and got ourselves ready for the finale. We had made close friends with the Scottish team and nobody wanted to say our goodbyes. As we began to dance to Auld Lang Syne for the last time, we all found our smiles again when we turned toward the Castle to find that the Top Secret Drum Corps joined in with our Pas De Basques.
Being apart of the cast for the Edinburgh Military Tattoo made me realise that if you want to achieve something, you must be focused, committed and disciplined; or you will never reach your goal. I had dreamed of dancing infront of Edinburgh Castle for 10 years, and now it’s not a dream – it’s a memory, one that I will never forget.
On the 30th of August, I made my way to Ayr, where I would take lessons with Aileen Robertson in the lead up to my Members – Highland Examination. For the past few years I have been helping teach at Justine’s studio as an Associate Teacher, it’s something that I instantly enjoyed. I loved the feeling that came with being able to pass on something you have a passion for to someone else. Since then another one of my goals has been to become a dance teacher and to someday open my own studio. When I received the Scholarship from BBM, I thought about all the things that I could achieve during my time in Scotland – it occurred to me that it would be so special to me if I received my teachers certificate from the very country that Highland dancing originates. After a few hard working dance classes with Aileen, I made my way to Peterhead to set my Examination on the 4th of September. Although I knew that I was confident with my theory and the technical side of Highland dancing due to my student teaching back home, I was still very nervous as the time for my Exam approached. My nerves were soon put to rest after the conclusion of the Exam when my examiner Rhona Lawrence told me that I had nothing to worry about. On the 25th of November, I received a letter informing me that I was now a member of the UKA and I had successfully completed my Members – Highland Exam.

On the 5th of September I travelled to Braemar for the Braemar Highland Gathering. This was one dance competition that I felt very honoured to be dancing at for a few reasons. Firstly, Braemar hosts one of the only dance competitions that I know of that you must be accepted to dance based on your results in competitions throughout the past year. Secondly, the reason that you must be accepted and cannot just enter is because it’s the only dance competition that the Patron is Her Majesty the Queen. The atmosphere at the Gathering was amazing, about halfway through the Gathering; the Queen arrived to watch over the games from the Royal box. The thing that made this even more special for me was not only was the Queen present at a Gathering I was dancing at, but the Royal box is situated infront of the Highland Dancers, and I was 1 of the first 3 dancers to perform the swords for her. There is no way to explain the feeling that I felt while on stage for my swords, it was a phenomenal experience that I will never forget.

On the 6th of September I was entered in the Blairgowrie Highland Games, unfortunately due to the amount of rain Scotland received that summer the Highland Gathering was flooded out and therefore cancelled. So instead of going straight back to Ayr like we had planned, we decided to see a little more of Scotland than we had once planned. We decided to travel up to Inverness before returning our caravan in Ayr. I had always thought that Inverness was beautiful, but you really have no idea what it’s like until you’re on the Loch itself. We went on a Jacobite Cruise, which took us on a cruise across the beautiful Loch Ness as well as on a tour of Urquhart Castle and inside the Lochness Exhibition Centre.

When we returned to Ayr, my dad took the opportunity to show me the sights relating to the story we told in our dance at the EMT. My dad grew up not too far from Kirk Alloway, so I had to chance to go to Burns Cottage where Robert Burns was born on the 25th of January 1759, as well as go to a hotel that my uncle used to work at that has the most beautiful fireplace in the foyer – this fireplace has the story of Tam O’Shanter carved above it, it was amazing to see. My dad also took me to the scene of the climax of the story, which was also the end of our dance, where Tam escapes the witches by crossing over water where the witches cannot follow. This famous bridge being the Brig O’Doon which is also known as Tam’s Brig. It was fascinating to be able to see all these sights when I had spent a month learning and then telling the story to the audiences that watched the EMT.

On the 10th of September we decided to make our way to Selkirk, so that we could visit the Dunsdale Mill which is where Dalgliesh produces their tartans. Most of the tartans I have had have been purchased from Dalgiesh, so it was amazing to be able to go inside and see the tartan mill. There has been a tartan that I have wanted for my Aboyne since I was nine; my mum had always told me that if I won a championship that she would buy it for me. Unfortunately, due to problems with injuries this goal of mine is still left unfulfilled but with only a few more days in Scotland left I decided that I could buy the tartan I have wanted for almost 11 years. The tartan I am referring to is now in the process of being made into my new Aboyne, which I am very excited about wearing for the first time at Champion of Champions in Queensland.

One opportunity I had while in Scotland that I am very thankful for was the chance to meet my dad’s side of the family for the first time. I had talked to them all on the phone many times over previously, but to finally have the chance to go to Ayr and meet them was amazing. With only a few more days in Scotland to go we made our way to Glasgow for the last part of my trip. On the 12th of September I was entered to dance in a competition in Glasgow, regrettably I was unable to compete due to illness; however I had the opportunity to watch my sister compete in Scotland. She did very well and made us all proud. But every trip comes to an end eventually, and on the 14th of September I departed from Glasgow airport for a long flight home. Even though I loved every bit of Scotland, 6 weeks is a long time to be away from home and I eagerly waited for the moment we arrived back in Sydney.

The BBM Scholarship helped me gain some memories that I will cherish forever. I was able to achieve my remaining goals for my dancing – those being to become a Highland Dance teacher and to dance in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo – as well as having some amazing experiences on the way such as dancing for the Queen and meeting my family.
Thanks to the BBM I have now taken what was a childhood hobby to a professional level and had an experience I will never forget. This is an experience that I would have been unlikely to enjoy without their assistance.

Welcome to Twenty Ten!!

This year has seen and will see magical things happen!

Firstly, Kirstin was a apart of the Ozscot Tattoo Team for the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Sydney.

Well done Kirky on performing in that rainy rainy weather!!

Next we had our debutante ball, where Kirstin and Ashley both represented Banksies by dancing in the display dances.

And Aidan was the page boy for the event!!

Jacob was one of the deb partners too!

All the girls and boys did a wonderful job!

This year is Champion of Champions in Queensland at Easter. At this stage, Murray's Ryans, Pascoes and Banks' are attending. Goodluck dancers!!

June see's me heading off to America to judge at the San Diego Highland Games! THis is VERY exciting and I cannot wait!!

Anna successfully attended the NSWSCHDInc Scruitneering session and is now a qualified scruitneer.

In the next few weeks I will be commencing preschool classes during the day on Mondays. 10.30am. I am excited about being able to teach highland during the working week and to little ones.

So that takes us up to half way through the year!!!

Students from my school, plus my own children got to be on National TV yesterday morning - bright and early! lol!

It was the TODAY SHOWs live weather cross, and it was all about The Children's Festival at Bankstown today.

Linnwood House

Each year the children dance at Linnwood House. It is a historic house set up as a museum. It relies on donations and volunteers to keep it going. There is no government help to pay the rates or repairs etc.

There were very few people there today as it rained this morning and I think it scared the visitors away. There were a few stalls selling crafty, cottage type goods.

The dancing was lovely and the kids were glad to perform even for such a small audience. The spectators were mostly old ladies who had nothing but nice things to say to the kids.

It's about a person in the US who has made a documentary about adult dancers commencing ballet.

The trailer is just lovely. I would love to see the dvd and am considering purchasing it.

I know that the adult dancers in my 'wifeys' class really enjoy their lessons. They laugh and have a joke, but work so hard each lesson at each dance we are doing. The International Highland Dancing Championships and Events

This year marks the 30year anniversary of Penninsula Highland Dancing Association (which is now known as Central Coast Highland Dancing) I think that I have been to every one of their competitions except the years I was in Scotland!!

On Friday night there was the gala dinner, which was very nice. Then the comp was on Saturday and Sunday.

My students danced and did very well.

Their results are as follows....

Saturday - Courtney
Fling - 2nd
Swords - 3rd
Overall - 5th.

Kirstin - Pre Championship -
Swords - 6th
Reel - 4th.

Studio Exams

Today Greer, Courtney-Eilish, Ashley and Kirstin sat their SDAA exams. Greer and Courtney sat Primary, Ashley sat her Bronze (Grade One) and Kirstin sat her Double Gold Bar (Grade six- Student Teachers)

Added to this, it was Greer's 9th birthday today! What a thing to have to do on your birthday! An exam!!

Well - it was a lovely birthday for her. Greer, as well as the other three all achieved HONOURS in their gradings! (Honours is the highest pass). On the teachers report it said "Justine, your students are an absolute pleasure to examine. Not only are they polite, but they know everything - they are a credit to you. Well done!"

I am so proud of them!

These photos are from our freezing cold winters morning this morning. We beat the examiner to the hall (she was running late) and the laneway was a wind tunnel. It was FREEZING!!!

Cailin for her 4th in the Hornpipe on Saturday and 4th in the Championship on Sunday!!

Kirstin for her 1st in the Trophy Swords on the Saturday and 4th in the Village Maid, on Sunday, giving her overall 6th in the Adult National Premiership

A special mention to Kirstin, who is still recovering from injury. To place 4th, with 24 in it -all of which were champions!! I am sooo proud!!!!

Well done to Danielle for trying her very best in the Primary and getting her special participation award.

Firstly, congratulations to all the dancers who performed in the Concert. I have received some wonderful feedback from other dance schools and from individuals about our items. Well done!!

COMPETITIONS
Good luck to those dancers competing at the Grand Australasian this weekend. And the Internationals at Gosford on the 19th and 20th July. These are two of the biggest competitions of the year, with dancers from interstate and overseas. So work your very best, and anything else is a bonus. A few housekeeping items before these competitions:
a) Check your costumes now (including braces for your kilt)
b) If you have any questions write them in your journal and show it to me or email me
c) Every dancer must be in full BANKSIE uniform every time they step into the venue.
d) I will be there to support you but will be moving between stages so don't rely on me to warm you up, However, I will do my best to be in a thousand places at once! But be there ready in plenty of time.
e) If you are called up onto the stage to receive a prize please curtsey or bow and thank the person handing the prize to you.
f) Congratulate the other winners in your section. Good sportsmanship is remembered and commented on.
g) Stay in costume for photos and please find me to talk and discuss your dances…. regardless of the results.
h) As we all learn, placings change with every adjudicator. You know when you have given a winning performance when you step off that stage.....
Remember YOU are always being watched and admired for grooming, sportsmanship and unity as a team.

Because of the Internationals & Exams in July there will be holiday lessons held on the following days (all dancers welcome $8 per class):

Wednesday 16th July 6-7pm

I am also offering some extra time for any dancers who may want a lesson before the Internationals. Please reply to this email and I can schedule a private class to SUPER SUPER fine tune your competition dances.
Classes will need to be paid for at the time of the lesson- $10 per half hour.

Festival of Tartans Concert was held last Sunday at St Mary's Band Club. Our studio had 2 items in it - If I had a Pirate Suit and Listen to my bagpipes.
It was a good fun day, and the kids looked great!!

Eastern Australian Championships Results for students

Congratulations to Madie, Brodie, Lynsey and Cailin for their great results last weekend!

Madie won 3rd in the Pas de Basques and Highcuts and 4th in Pas de Basques. This was her very first competition, so especially well done!!

Brodie won 3rd in Flora and 6th overall in Beginners Premiership.

Lynsey won many prizes in the section dances and 5th overall in the Beginners Premiership.

Cailin won 3rd overall in the Intermediate Premiership. This was Cailin's last Intermediate competition. She is a Premier girl now!!!

Ozscot Workshop Memories.....

OZSCOT WORKSHOP BATHURST - AUSTRALIA DAY LONG WEEKEND
In class a few weeks ago I got the dancers to write in their journals their memories of the workshop in January. I thought it would be a good idea to focus on what they could remember - a few months down the track.

Ceilidh wasn't in the class, so I just copied verbatium from her dance journal when the event actually occurred as I feel she has put some interesting points down..

Ceilidh 8 years - copied out from her Dance Journal

First we had Mr Grant. I enjoyed it so much, it was gr8! We all got given Mr Grant's book. I got the first book and Mummy got the 2nd book and Mr Grant wrote in them. I learnt a good thing from him 'When I work my hardest in class it doesn't matter what the judge says, I'm still a winner'. And I learnt that 'eye contact is everything' and what a 'power move' is - YES YES YES!!!
Then we had other classes, but I didnt write them in my journal that day. We did do our choreography with Lisa Turner.

On Day Two we had Natasha Millwood for warm up. We didn't use music that day but did nots of stretch and strengthening exercises.
Then we did Lilt and Flora with Amy Roach and she focussed on me staying on the ball of my foot and my half point.
We had Mrs Roach for Barracks and we got to learn EVERY STEP of the Barracks, we also did Laddie.
Then we had Miss Grant from Scotland for the Fling and Swords. She used to dance with Mummy. Greer and I had to stop and do things slowly, especially the Toe and Heel. She picked up my foot and put it in the right position. She got us to do backward froggy too.
Then we had Mrs Clarke from NZ for the Seann Triubhas. We did a little concert. I did my open pdb step but I made a little mistake but she said 'here's my version' and told me the right way.
We then went to the swimming pool. We all chased Mummy in the pool. And it was so fun! After that we had massage with Jayde and I asked Ashleigh if she could push really hard. Then we got to watch Hairspray in the big room! Then we went to bed!

On Day 3 we had Miss Grant first to do the Cheer Dance. That was fun!! We then had highland technique with Amy and Lisa. Then we practised the choreography with Lisa

Finally we showed the parents our dances and that was the end of the workshop. I was so sad that it was all over but hopefully I can go back again next year.

Ashley 12 years
The Ozscot workshop was great. We learnt alot of steps and technique to improve our dances. Also the teachers were awesome. Each teacher picked up on our different things and gave different opinions. I am really looking forward to next years workshop it is a really great experience to be a part of workshops and learn from lots of different teachers and to learn new steps!

Concert Coming Up.... 15th JUne

The New South Wales Committee of Highland Dancing will be holding their annual fundraising concert on Sunday 15th June at St Marys Band Club, St Marys, Sydney.

This is a really wonderful day. Studios from all over NSW and ACT participate in this event. They do studio items as well as massed traditional dances (like the Fling and Swords)

The kids really enjoy it. My dancers have a wonderful time and I love choreographing for the event.

I always have a dance that has the "Banksie Babes" in it. Last year we had Darcy and Noah as our two littliest babes - Noah was still only 1 and Dee was 2. It was very very very cute! The audience just LOVE seeing the tiny ones up there on the stage!!!

This year I am doing a dance that is inspired by a childrens book by Pamela Allen called 'If I had a Pirate Suit'. The entire studio will be involved in this dance.

Added to that, my more senior dancers will do a broadswords.

So - if you're not busy and would like a wonderful afternoons entertainment - come along!!!!

Anzac Day

It was a wonderful weekend and I am VERY VERY VERY proud of the girls and boys!!!

We were so lucky to have a beautiful venue and gorgeous day for this event. It was our first competition of the year and wow - did the kids do well!

Firstly -

Cailin - Intermediate all ages (so up with 17 year olds as well) won 2nd-Fling, & Jig 3rd -Seann Triubhas & lilt-

Brodie - In her very first Beginners competition, the youngest in the section won - The TROPHY DANCE Fling, 1st in the section Fling and 2nd in the Swords

Ozscot Workshop 08

Sarah, Ashley, Cailin and Greer (and Ceilidh) went up to Bathurst for the Long Weekend to do a 3 day workshop.

I am very proud of them all. They worked very hard and were fantastic ambassadors for the studio.

Sarah and Ceilidh won the awards in their groups for encouragement and promise.

I hope that everyone has had a wonderful refreshing break! A break from work, a break from school, a break from routines and a break from dancing!!

Happy New Year!!

As we start 2008 we would like to invite all students, to take part in the Summer Classes.

Kick start your year, get back into condition and bond as a team.
Competitive students please make sure you are attending Summer Classes to make sure you get a competitive edge for our first competitions in 2008. The first one is only 6 weeks away. And C of C is only 11 weeks away!!!!

I am holding 3 summer classes during January. This is to let the dancers revive their bodies and minds (and pointy toes) and also so they can catch up with each other, I know that they miss their friends.

Classes will be held Wednesday 9th and 16th January from 9.30-11 and Monday 21st January 9.30 - 11. I have made them nice and early so that they are out of the way before the heat of the day. These lessons will be $10 each.

If you have any friends who are interested in highland dancing, the summer classes are a very good way of introducing them to highland at a less frantic pace. So bring them along for a go!

There are NEW CLASS TIMES for this year

Mondays - 4.30 - 5.30 and 5.15 - 7pm

Wednesdays 6-7 (championship/conditioning class) 7-8 adults class

We had our Christmas Pary and Awards Afternoon last Saturday.

Softplay is the BEST PLACE to have your party! You have the place to yourself and you dont have to clean up and the kids have a balL! And it's air conditioned!

We did our Secret Santa presents and I gave our the exam results.

Daylesford Highland Gathering

Kirstin competed at Daylesford a fortnight ago. She did very well, especially as she is dancing injured atm! Well done Kirstin!

Here is an excerpt from an email she sent me...

In my Restricted Premier sections I got 2nd in the Fling, 3rd in the Swords, 3rd in the Strath-Tulloch and 3rd in the Hornpipe. I also got a 6th in the Premiership Lilt.

It was a very hot and long day, but i enjoyed myself, and thought i did alot better than i was expecting, so im happy with the results from the weekend.

Studio Exams

Last Thursday (22nd) we held our Annual Studio Exams.

All of the students (bar our HSC students, another that was on camp and another that has had injuries throughout the year) sat their exams and assessments.

There were 17 candidates throughout the day.

I am very proud and pleased to report that the students received HONOURS in their exams!!!

Alison's Farewell

Dear darling Ali has moved to Perth.

She has been dancing with me for 7 years and went through her dancing exams to gain her Teachers Certificate with me 2 years ago.

It is so sad to see her go, but she is off on a new adventure with her Lovely Paul!!

She will be back to visit, and if they return to Sydney to live, then she will definately be back to class!!

We had a farewell for her at PJ Gallaghers in Parramatta a few weeks ago.

October and November Competition Results

We have had 3 competitions leading up till the end of the year. Just one more to go, which is interstate - Daylesford. Kirstin is going down there.

Lithgow was at the end of October and Cailin, Ashley and Greer danced there. The three of them did very well and placed in most of the dances.

Castle Hill Gathering was the following weekend, the 3 girls above, plus Sarah, danced there. Sarah got 4th in the NSW Championships, and the other girls all placed in their sections. THis was Ashleigh's last beginners competition.

The following weekend was Newcastle. Cailin and Ashley danced here, Ashleigh's first Novice. Again, they both came home with prizes.

FIRST DANCE CLASS?! (Ultimate guide for beginners)

Here is a, hopefully, complete and helpful post to answer your question. Oh! and welcome to join the dazzling dance world.

Effort & Class conduct
All dancers must be willing to push themselves to be the best dancer they can be.
At all times dancers must show respect to their instructors and classmates.
Be on time and ready to dance.

Get Ready
Dress Code
Have you checked the school dress code? (Some schools have very strict dress code. Please pay attention to that before you purchase your dream leotard.)

Turn yourself into a dance mode before the class start. It will always help you to get into the atmosphere quicker and get ready to dance. (Whatever you are worrying, stressing about, throw it outside the studio.)

Warm Up
- This often takes place before class.
- In some beginner classes, the teacher may lead the students to do some stretching and warming up at the beginning of the class.

Why warming up is important
Simple answer: to be safe. The main purpose of warming up is to increase your heart rate slightly. This has two benefits: 1) it raises your core body temperature; and 2) it increases the blood (oxygen) flow to your muscles to prepare your body for more vigorous physical activity. Your muscles and tendons (which attach your muscles to your bones) will be more flexible for stretching after mild movement has raised your internal body temperature. This flexibility helps you increase the range of motion of your joints and may help you avoid injuries such as muscle tears and pulls.

How Long should I warm up?
It takes your body approximately 3 minutes to realize it needs to pump more blood to your muscles. Warm ups should last approximately 5 - 10 minutes and they should incorporate stretching of large muscle groups (such as the quadriceps, calves, hamstrings, hip flexors, shoulders etc...)

Barre
The barre is a handrail, approximately waist-high, that dancers use to steady themselves during the first part of a dance class. The barre provides a reference point; it can be used to provide resistance,as when you press down on it to lengthen the spine; and it is your first partner. "Barre" is also a shorthand term for exercises done at the barre; dancers frequently refer to "doing a barre," for example to warm up just before performing.

Centre
Then you move to the center of the studio to work without support. The second part of class, c consists of slow work in which the emphasis is on sustaining positions and on balance. The final part of class, consists of fast work, mostly combinations (sequences of steps) with the big jumps and turns that make dance such an impressive and dazzling sight.

Remember to applause and thank the teacher at the end of the class.

Cool Down
There is a part for warming up. Why not cooling down?
It is often the best time for stretching as your body is fully warm up. Your muscles are best and easiest to be stretched at this point of time. Cooling down stretching also help to avoid the soreness and tightness you may feel after class.

Why Cool Down?
After you've reached and maintained your training heart rate level in the aerobic portion of your class, it is important to recover gently. The cool down serves two purposes: 1) it reduces your pulse; and 2) it returns the blood to your heart in sufficient quantities to rid the muscles of lactic acid (a chemical result of muscular fatigue). If you stop suddenly, the blood will pool in your legs instead of returning to your heart. Dizziness, nausea and a "worn out" feeling are common symptoms of an improper cool down.

Duration of Cool Downs
It takes your body approximately 3 minutes to realize it does not need to pump all the additional blood to your muscles. A safe cool down period is at least 3 minutes, preferably 4-5 minutes. All cool downs should be followed by stretching of the muscles to avoid soreness and tightness

Wow - what a great day! It was organised by another teacher, who teaches at Yagoona, she asked me if I had any dancers who would be able to attend.

Term 3 is almost over! Oh MY! I can’t believe it! It was a long term but it seems to have just flown!!The dancers have been working so hard on their choreographies and they look great! I can’t wait to seem them performed at the competition on the 30^th September.

Lessons will cease on Saturday 29^th September and will recommence on Monday 15^th October, for Term 4. There will be two holiday classes during the break, I will let you know the dates of those closer to the time.

SATURDAY CLASS - Term 4 will have the Saturday Class from 9.30-10.45. The younger dancers will be from 9.30 - 10.15, with the older dancers staying to complete their beginner dances in the last 30mins.

EXAMS THURSDAY 22^nd NOVEMBER.

Going home with this newsletter is an envelope with your exam information on it. Please fill it in and return to me asap, definitely before the end of term. I need to fill in all the paperwork and post it off during the holidays. The assessments (PrePrimary and Primary) are very good for the children. They get a report on their work, but they are unable to ‘fail’, it is just an assessment – so it is positive in all aspects. The examinations are pass/fail, but I would never send a candidate in who I thought couldn’t cope, so please don’t be alarmed about that, for those of you who are doing the examination segment.

DISPLAYS

We have had lots and lots of displays these past few weeks, with another this Saturday at Bankstown. It has been really lovely to see our beginner dancers performing in the displays, and I know it’s done their confidence a world of good. I would encourage you all to attend dance outs and displays. It is a totally different atmosphere to the competition circuit, the comments from the crowd make you swell with pride (and I say that as a dancing Mum and a teacher.)

PRACTISE

The dreaded word! Recently I have been asking to see the dancer’s journals and setting them practice, not just ‘dance practice’ but ‘thinking practice too’. I have just found some really great tips regarding practice, I hope you find these useful. Perhaps the dancers can cut them out and paste them into their journals? I got these ideas from dance.net. It has a highland segment and many parents, dancers, teachers and judges are on there. They are mostly from America and Canada (where Highland is huge) but some great ideas….

I have two DD's, one is a novice and the younger one a beginner.. We just had conversations with our dance instructor to try to motivate the younger one to practice more, etc. However, the most important thing I realized is my DD's are individuals, and they love different things about Highland dance. My older daughter loves the friends she's made, the motivation competitions provide, and a stage to perform on. She is motivated to work hard, and feels rewarded by learning more dances and seeing the payoff. My younger daughter simply loves having fun, and being part of the dance school. She simply tries her best, and is happy even if her best isn't THE best. Our teacher understands that they are individuals and each is taking something important from Highland dance. The practicing, if forced will simply backfire if they are not self motivated at the time. Good luck

I'm not just a dance teacher, I'm a dance mom too! I have two daughters who dance. One just finished taking a year off. Her big issue was that she didn't want to perform in the community. She was shy, and some kids at school were just plain ignorant to her about highland dance and she couldn't shake it off. I felt, rather than force her, I'd give her time to discover what she wanted. She tried out a few other activities, but guess what? She's baaack!
Talking about why they don't want to dance or perform in class (again, depending on the age) is a good idea. Setting goals even better. Asking what their favorite competition is and working towards getting a medal at it is an idea.
I did have a dancer who was starting to "stray" in class. Her mother came forward and just simply stated getting the dancer to practice was worse than anything. So I worked a little one on one with her dancer and got her to express what she wanted from her dancing and how she could get it. Part of the problem was when practicing was taking place. If it was right after supper, her tummy was full and she felt heavy (she's 8). Her routine was come home from school, snack, homework, supper, practice, chore, and play/tv/computer. So we talked with her Mom and it changed to come home from school, snack, practice, supper, homework, chore, and play/tv/computer. There was a significant change in her attitude.

Depends on the age, but I find the following makes practices go a lot smoother and they seem to look forward to them more:
-warm up to some music other than highland- try Irish, fiddle, full pipe band, Red Hot Chili Pipers, pop music
-do choreography first as a motivator, then the traditional dances
-watch other dancers on YouTube and then try it, for example watch a championship fling and then dance the fling
-video tape your child doing a dance and then watch the video with them, then try the dance again
Most importantly, give them a choice: shall we practice Saturday or Sunday? Shal we practice before dinner today or after dinner? I'll choose two dances for you to practise and you choose two. Etc.
Then I always end the practice with "last dance is your choice". I get no arguments and it gets them to do one more

I have a few suggestions:
If your girls are practicing together, it could be that they're rubbing off on each other. I teach children and I find that if one is tired or unmotivated, the others tend to follow, so it might be an idea to separate them and have them practice at different times during the day.
Also, something that I've found personally helps me to get motivated is to find some new music to practice to! I like to find either new celtic music or even pop music that is in the right time signature and do my fling to a new song! Sometimes Highland can feel repetitive, because it's always the same dances.
You might try also finding other kids in the school who are eager practicers or perhaps a bit older and more advanced who would be willing to practice with your children. Seeing someone else who is eager and dancing well could help motivate them.
Finally, I know you feel bad about making them guilty for not practicing, but it might not hurt to explain the situation calmly to them. They may (depending on their age) be able to see that it's important to earn their new outfits and so they understand that a certain amount is expected of them. I don't think you're being unreasonable to expect them to practice.

My mother was in the same situation with me when I was younger, what with growing and having to get new outfits, and she explained to me that if she couldn't afford to pay for competitions and outfits if I wasn't going to practice. She also added that I was welcome to dance recreationally without a new costume if I wanted, but if I wanted to compete, and all the costs that go with it, I simply had to practice. I'm glad she told me and although there were days I didn't feel like practicing, I don't resent her in any way for making me practice- in fact, I'm glad she did!

Ceilidh Night!

Thankyou to Greer, Ashley, Brodie, Ceilidh and Connor who represented the school at the Gaelic Singers 25th Birthday Ceilidh Night a few weeks ago. (Thanks also to Aidan and Darcy who decided to join in on the march and the pas de basques!)

The kids had an absolute ball playing the games they had there, and peformed well too!

Linnwood House

Last Sunday we had our annual display at Linnwood House at Guildford. The weather had been miserable all week, and it looked to be that way again for Sunday.

Our first session we danced inside in the lovely hallway. This actually worked well as the stall holders could watch the dancing.

Then, the sun came out! So we danced our 2nd set on the verandah! It was wonderful!

Dancing for me were Averil (17) Sarah, Ceilidh, Lauren (all 8), Connor and Lauren (both 5) and Darcy (3 last week) also 'danced'!

Thankyou girls (and Connor!), you were beautiful!!!

I thought it had been a while since I wrote about who my other teachers and student teachers are who take classes for me when I am unable to teach. They are a great help to me and I know that they are just as enthused and excited to be a part of the Banksie's Team!!

Leanne (whom you all know as 'Brodie's Mum!) - Leanne is a qualified teacher and examiner with the SDAA. Leanne also has her teacher qualifications in Tap. She is also a competition organiser and on the Council and Management Committee of our examining body. Up until 3 years ago Leanne had her own dancing school at Canley Heights that taught ballet, tap, jazz and highland.

Alison (Ali!) - Alison is a qualified teacher with the SDAA and is currently a delegate for the NSW State Committee of Highland Dancing. Ali is also trained in ballet and contempory.

Casey (Little Sis!) - When she is in Australia and not being a professional dancer in Europe! Casey is trained in Highland, Ballet (university diploma), Irish, Jazz and Tap.

Kirstin (Kirky! Courtneys big sister!) - Kirstin is one of my associate teachers. She is studying her Pre-Teachers Highland Exam with the SDAA

Sarah - (Saaaarrrraaah!) - Sarah is one of my Associate Teachers and she is studying her Pre-Teachers Highland Exam with the SDAA and will be sitting this exam in November. Sarah also studies ballet and jazz dancing.

Belynda - (Bee) - Belynda is one of my Associate Teachers. She has her Associate Teachers Highland Exam (Double Gold Bar)

Lauren (Big Lauren) - Lauren is a student teacher who assists me with the little ones during lessons. She is currently studying for her 5th grade exam.Lauren also studies ballet.

DANCING NEWS AUGUST 2007

Welcome back to Term 3 and welcome to our new students, Maddi, Hannah and Scarlette. Please make sure you say ‘hi’ to them and make them feel welcome!!

We had a wonderful term 2, and I thank all of you dancers for working so very hard in lessons and at the competitions and displays that we had. I am very proud of you all!

At the moment, the competitive dancers are learning their solos for the SDAA September competition at St Marys. So things are a bit hectic during lessons, and I apologise for that! We are not used to having solos in our kind of dancing.

Please try and remember your solo (or get mum to write it down!) because my brain can’t keep that many new choreographies in it!! If you like, your mum can bring a camera to class and video you doing your dance, so you can practice it at home.

At SDA September we will also be doing our troupe dances, all 3 of them – Knees Up, Faery Dance and Panic! So we will start back working on them very soon.

GAELIC SINGERS DISPLAY
Firstly the email I sent through the other day regarding the ceilidh at Thornliegh on Saturday 1^st September celebrating 25 years of the Sydney Gaelic Singers. Thank you to those who have responded, either being able to dance or unable. I am currently working out what we are going to do. So far, dancing, we have Brodie, Ashley, Greer, Ceilidh and Connor. It would be great if we could have a few more. And parents, you will have a great time too! $15 for parents, free for children. Bring a plate of munchies for the table.

DISPLAY AT LINNWOOD HOUSE.

We have been asked back to dance at Linnwood House, Byron Street, Guildford on Sunday 9^th September. 11am and 1pm. Each year this is a great display and ALL of our students are welcome to do it, not just the competitive dancers. It is the most beautiful venue and the kids always have a great time. This year Im going to try and get their early and park my car right next to the verandah and use the car as the amplifying system!! We will be able to have a run through of our solo’s at this display – a good time for the dancers to practice it in front of an audience and in a wider space than my wee studio!!

SATURDAY CLASSES.

For the following Saturdays I have had to change class times due to a family situation. I apologise for any inconvenience. 18/8 25/8 1/9 8/9 15/9. Those dates class will be from 9.30-10.30 (and for the 5 & 6 year olds from 9.45 – 10.30.) After that the lessons will be back to 10 – 11 am.

EXAMS

I will be booking studio exams in for the end of the year. When I know there are no competitions on. I will let you know what date and what exam you will be doing asap. Some dancers will not be doing the next grade exam, but a dance assessment this year (which is a new system the SDA has introduced where dancers do only the dance segment of the next grade, and don’t have to worry about the theory or the demonstrations) It does not mean that they don’t do that section when they do the exam, but just that they will be more familiar with it when the time comes. Also for those dancers who are get worried in exam situations, it gives them a introduction to exams by only doing the dance segment.

Why would I want to work towards a dance exam? Working towards an exam is a way for students to feel they are reaching major goals throughout the year. Being tested on their work gives teacher, student and parents a fair indication of how well the student is progressing. Qualifications are highly recognized in the dance world.

End of term

This Saturday will be the last lesson of the term. I hope everyone enjoys their break. I am off to New Zealand to judge a highland competition in the middle weekend, so I am very excited about that. See you all on Monday 16^th July for the beginning of Term 3.

Concert

Wow – you were all so wonderful in the concert!! I was very proud of you all, and I know that your family and friends must have been too! You ROCKED!!! I can’t wait for the dvd to come out!!! I want to sit there and watch the dances without having to hold my breath (like I was doing at the concert!!)

You all looked so beautiful – WELL DONE!!!!

Choreography

Over Term 3 I will be starting some solo choreography for all the dancers. At the September SDA competition on the 30^th September there will be a solo choro competition – with a difference. For example, all the dancers in the 7 & U will dance to the same set tune. It will be great to see what different dancers/studios come up with. The ages groups are 7 & U, 10 & U, 13 & U, 17 & U and 18&0. I am really excited about this because it will be lots and lots of fun, plus you get to do something extra at a comp, not just the boring old Flings!!!

The outfits for the choreography are up to you and your parents! Just check it with me too please, but you can chose what you would like to wear. So maybe you might just want to wear your kilt or lilt. Or maybe your ‘knees up’ outfit, or something else tartan you may have in your cupboard.

Competitions

Congratulations to all the dancers who have competed recently. Remember that as long as you try your best at competitions, then that is what you should be proud of. If you gain a prize then that is just a bonus. It is the judge’s decision on the day, and their idea of whom the best is may vary from someone else. I am proud and happy as long as you WORK YOUR BEST on the day and HAVE A GREAT TIME!!!

1. Really would rather be dancing

2. Hate conceited dancers

3. Outside of class are actually very clumsy and accident-prone

4. When at the shops dancing is imminent. Turns, jumps, and poses are sure to happen as soon as the aisle is clear.

5. When we hear music we have danced to, we have to do a part of that dance, no matter who looks at us!

6. No where else but in a ballet studio will you see people take off so much clothing AND no one notices.

7. If we get hurt, we lie and say we're okay no matter how bad it is.

8. Classical ballet is harder than it looks.

9.'Off days' are the worst kind of days we can have.

10. If we do something stupid, you must tell everyone else how and what we did before being able to carry on with the class!

11. When we fall on our butt, we have to make it look like we did it on purpose and end it in the most beautiful pose you've ever seen.

12. Its not unusual to buy a cd with a song we have danced to on it, just for that one song.

13. When you do something amazing, no one sees it. End of story.

14. We always count turns no matter who does them

15. We find rhythm in everything: music, hammering, turn signals, walking, walking down stairs...

16. There are no counts after 8, once you get to eight you start again from 1!

17. We stand in either first, third, or fifth positions and not notice, with the occasional second or fourth.

18. All ballet dancers must hate cheerleaders.

19. Watching ballet with non dancers is the worst.

20. We constantly whine about how bad we are.

21. We are always too fat.

Moyna's Tribute

Today was a very special day in the Scottish World in Australia.
The Gaelic Singers had organised a concert - it was a tribute to Moyna Scotland.

Mrs Scotland has been involved in all aspects of Scottish Culture all her life. She is now moving down to Kiama to 'retire'. She helped to found Scottish House,which is a group that is endeavouring to keep Scottish Culture alive in Australia.

There were many people performing today at her tribute. The Gaelic Choir, Parramatta Pipe Band, Sydney Scottish Fiddlers,

Robert Pearce on the pipes and Bran singing,Robin MacKenzie-Hunter performed puir-a-buel (which is mouth music) - incidently, my kids were so excited about this, they said 'this is the fling, this is the fling!'

There was also a wonderful poem penned and performed by Penny MacNicol. And many many many comments and tributes from different people.

It was a lovely and special afternoon and I am very proud to have been a part of it.

Dancing for me today were Ceilidh, Connor, Brodie and Sarah. In the first bracket Sarah and Ceilidh danced the lilt, Brodie and Connor danced Pas de Basques, Sarah danced Seann Triubhas and Brodie Pas de Basques and Highcuts.

In the 2nd bracket Sarah danced Blue Bonnets over the Border, Ceilidh and Brodie did the Swords and Connor did his Pas de Basques again (cause that's all he knows!) Then they all did a massed fling (and Connor stood still on the end - well, his idea of still!)

They did a marvelous job, and especially enjoyed the 'tea and cake' at the end!!! lol!

SCOTTISH DANCING ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIA

Many of my dancers performed in ththe SDAA competition last weekend, 26/27 May, it was held at Ashfield Boys HS.

They danced very well and the results show that!!

I am so very proud of all the dancers who competed at the competition at Campbelltown.

4 pupils competed for the very first time on Sunday and WOW what a success they were!! Added to that, we had many dancers in the morning and afternoon sessions. All dancers were successful and the two ‘excellence’ scholarships of $100 WERE GIVEN TO OUR PUPILS!!!! WOOOHOOO! Well done Cailin and Sarah!!!

Kirstin – 2nd in Restricted Title, 5th Laddie, Fling and swords, 5th in Trophy Blue Bonnets, 4th in Village Maid and Seann Triubhas

State Committee Concert – St Marys Band Club
Tickets are now available from me for the NSW State Committee concert that is being held on Sunday 17th June at 2pm. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children. The children will need to be at St Marys at 9am, the little ones that are in Knees Up Mother Brown need to be there at 12 O’Clock, so they can have a run through on the stage as well.
Tickets are also available at the door, if you would prefer.

Outfits for Concert
The outfits will soon be available for ‘Mother Brown’. They will cost $20each.
The outfits for the Fairy Dance are the Lilt outfit with fairy wings.
The outfits for Panic! Are the shirt which you have already paid for, and the skirt and stockings (unsure of the price of these as yet)

Exams
Our dancing exams that were to be held on July 1st have been cancelled due to an administration problem. They have changed the examination year and 1st July is now the first day of the new year, too difficult for our exams to be on that day for this year. I will let you know what the re-scheduled date is.

Competitions
Many of our new dancers are competing in their very first competition this Sunday, at Campbelltown. Best of luck to them all!!!

Dancing Outfits
For this year, the new beginners may borrow a kilt outfit from me, as of next year they will need to be hired ($50 for the year). However, all dancers will need to buy their own kilt blouse, which they can keep, and it will go with whatever dance outfit they are wearing. The kilt blouses will be available on Sunday at the competition, or from me at lessons after that date. They cost $20.

Deb Ball
Two of our dancers are making their debut on the 30th June (Kirstin and Catherine). If you would like to attend the debutante ball (which is being held at Bankstown Trotting Club) tickets are $70 each. The studio is making up a table, please see Lesley Ryan if you are interested in being a part of that table. Senior dancers are invited to be a part of our display team. Tickets for performers are $50.

Fees
Term fees are now due. Please fix me up as soon as possible, or speak to me about alternative arrangements.

World Championship Photos

I was just browsing the Cowal website http://www.cowalgathering.com and was looking at their photos.

I was amazed by this one of Morgan Bamford. Morgan is 14 and lives in NZ. She has been world champion & scottish champion every year she has gone to Cowal, and I think she's been going now since 1999! Yet in this photo of her, as the results were being called out, she is standing there, hands clasped and looking at her number. No matter HOW good you are, you still wonder if you were good enough on the day!!

Here are some other shots which I loved. The 'champions fling' is the fling done on the stage at the end of the presentations. The world champion in the Juvenille (Morgan) Junior (David) and Adult (Erin) dance their fling and the whole stadium claps along. It is the most phenomenal experience, being in that audience. To be on the stage with them would be amazing!!!!

Look at the turnout in these Toe and Heel movements!!!!! WOW!

That is SOOOOOO true!!! We have sat in those tiny wincy little seats in the pouring rain to watch the tattoo - and i would do it again (especially if my girls were in it!). There is NOTHING like being in the stands of the Edinburgh Tattoo. I reckon the only thing above it - would be out there dancing on the promenade!!

Holiday Classes Coming Up!

Hi Dancers and Mums!!

Term 1 is almost over, just Monday and Wednesday classes this week to go and then the Easter Bunny will be here!!

Term Two will commence Saturday 28th April (no Monday first day of school lesson and no Anzac day lesson)

I will be having some holiday workshop classes, all dancers, big or small, are welcome to attend these classes.
They will cost $10 each, just pay on the day.

Tuesday 10th April 9.30 - 11.00am

Monday 16th April 9.30 - 11.00am

Wednesday 18th April 7 - 8.30pm

Friday 20th April 9.30 - 11.00am

Bring your skipping ropes and joggers to the holiday classes, we are going to do some conditioning work as well as our highland!!!!

For those dancers attending Campbelltown Competition and SDA Championships in May, please try to make some of these holiday classes to keep your standard improving.

JOURNALS
These journals are really proving a positive tool in helping the students keep track of their progress and goals. If you don’t know what those ‘books’ are that the students are carrying around please ask them to show you and explain their work. If you haven't received your journal, please see me.

REMEMBER to put your name on all shoes, socks, t-shirts, bike pants, crop tops, leotards, street clothes, hats… have I forgotten anything… yes, drink bottles, lunch boxes etc. So much is left around that it must belong to somebody!

Bathurst Highland Gathering

I had 3 dancers compete at Bathurst Games last weekend. And Ceilidh went as well (but she's only mine by blood not by tuition! LOL)

All 4 girls did very well.

It was only Catherine's 2nd Dancing Competition! She came home with some 1sts, 2nds and 3rds!

Sarah won everything except the Hornpipe, in which she got 2nd and the Jig, in which she got NUFFIN! (What DID you do in the Jig Sarah??? lol)

Miss Brodie Rosa did her fling for the very first time in a competition! She made no mistakes ALL DAY LONG and she got 3rd in all her dances!!

Ceilidh Jo got 2 3rds in her beginners section, one in the Seann Truibhas and one in the Lilt.

Aussie dancers in Scotland

I received an email from a friend in Qld letting us know how her son is going in Scotland. Craig is living over there this year.

Here is her email...

Hi all, just a short update on how Craig is going in Scotland. I am really happy to advise that he won the UK Championship Sunday night (pics attached). We were really delighted about that as you can imagine especiallyas he gained 3rd place in the Central Scotland Championship the week before..

DANCING NEWS March 2007

Firstly, congratulations to all the dancers who have been out there competing this year. Not just for what you may have won, but on trying your best, and giving our studio a great name! I received a wonderful email from a teacher/judge in Brisbane congratulating me on the standard of our girls, its up on the Banksies blogspot.

Displays
Please let me know if you are able to dance at Old Government House on Sunday 27th May. It is an all day event (we do a 15min display about 4 times during the course of the day.). If you can do morning, afternoon or both, please let me know. I will have more details of exact times as soon as I receive them.
The senior display gig at the Westin Hotel has fallen through.

Competitions
Campbelltown Competition is Sunday 20th May – Im hoping to have our beginners and primary dancers ready for this competition. The following Sunday is SDAA at Ashfield Boys HS and then the fortnight after that is St George Eisteddfod at Arncliffe.

Exams
Studio exams will be held on 1st July, at home. For those doing Preprimary Assessments – these are ‘no-fail’ events, and a kilt outfit is not needed. I will be sending home the exam fees envelope at the start of next term. Please let me know if morning or afternoon suits you for the exams. They will be an all day event, so first in first served regarding times. This is also the day of Australasian Championships. So if the Premiers want to the champ, you will need to be first up in the morning for the exams. The champs don’t start until 1pm.

Debutante Ball
The SDAA Deb ball is being held on Saturday 30th June at Bankstown Trotting Club. There are 3 girls from the studio making their debut, Kirstin, Averil and Catherine. We will also be doing a studio display dance in the entertainment section. (eligible for those dancers 13 and over). The studio mums are talking about putting a table together for the ball. Tickets are approx $70 each. Please let Ingrid (Katrina’s mum) or Lesley (Ashley and Greer’s mum) know if you are interested in going and they will mark your name down.

Concert
The NSW State Committee Concert is on Sunday 17th June at St Marys Band Club. Very Exciting Stuff!! We are doing 3 studio dances in it. The younger dancers are doing ‘Knees Up Mother Brown’. The Beginners Performance Group are doing the ‘Magical Fairy Dance’ and the Seniors are doing “Panic! At the Disco’ I will discuss outfits with you very soon, but I promise they won’t be expensive!!
Tickets are nice and cheap – so please bring along your family and friends, they will enjoy the day because its not just boring old bagpipes!! I’ve been told that tickets will be available soon.

TShirts - $15
I have just received some studio singlets and tshirts. They have turned out really nicely! Ive got from size 8 – adult (but the 8 is a very small 8, Darcy was walking around in it and it didn’t look too ridiculous!!)
There are adult’s tshirts available as well, if any parents would like one.

All the shirts are $15 each.

Fundraising
I am going to try and organise the buskers license for the City of Sydney so that we can get into the city to do some fundraising over the holidays. I will keep you posted.

Hi Justine,

Just wanted you to know that Sarah was just a delight to have in our home this weekend and she represented your studio very very admirably. She was agreeable, friendly and well-mannered and above all, we loved her cool Banksie's uniform!!!!!

Sarah danced so well and was such a credit to you. Congratulations on her 6th placing in what was a very difficult championship. The section results also show what a good effort she put in. Lauren also danced very well and I know you would have been proud of her too. Congratulations on their efforts, technique and style Justine. You are doing such a good job in promoting Highland Dancing in this country.

Sarah has the 3 trophies our family won last year at the Eastern Australian Championship. I've cleaned them and hope they are acceptable.I'm still paranoid about the bag thing so please let me know me know sooner than later if the maroon bag I have belongs to you.
